program note:

This piece is part of a larger collaboration with percussionist Kevin Yetter to create a multi-movement work focusing on the nuanced and complex emotions we feel in response to nature. “there are no birds outside my window” reflects on our changing relationship to wild spaces. The piece was inspired by reflections on moving to a large city and the realization of a newfound distance from the birds that used to live in the wooded areas near our previous home. The piece explores the sense of grief one feels when realizing that these friends are no longer near, while simultaneously remembering and appreciating the joy you shared. The piece also leans toward an acceptance or trust in the process of sitting in these emotional spaces as well as the creative process itself.
